Shaun D. Leroi-Call of Duty finally hits its stride in this new intense installment of Treyarch’s Black Ops series. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 features many new and interesting changes, to not only the core gameplay, but the modes the game traditionally offers. Without anymore beading around the bush, lets get into these new modes.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room… Campaign mode. Black Ops 4 does NOT include an official campaign alongside the game. An official statement from Treyarch about the lack of said campaign was answered by Treyarch chairman, Mark Lamia, said "Black Ops 4 doesn't have a traditional campaign, we're weaving narrative into each of the modes,". This was stated in the community reveal live-stream on May 17th, earlier this year. So what do they mean by “narrative”? If twelve repetitive, boring, missions is what you’re looking for, then you’ve come to the right place. They replaced the Campaign tab with Specialist HQ, where you can access the multiplayer specialists and learn about the very confusing and weirdly interesting story of each character. I for one am in favor of this feature to learn about some your favorite specialists and also learn about the new ones as well. They all have one in-depth high quality cut scene but for the most part give slightly a little more insight to what character you want to play. A returning fan-favorite character returns to introduce each specialist and who better than Sgt. Frank Woods from Black Ops 1. This mode is extremely amature and truly a let down for how repetitive the missions can be and can only be described as an immediate pass and a boring chore to complete. You’re going to want to skip this, trust me.
This new mode was originally a very risky move for Treyarch to take and what was thought to be another cookie-cutter battle royale, but that risk ended up paying off. This new mode was appropriately titled Blackout. Blackout is different than your usual battle royale and has its own style and feel for a complete tactical difference. 100 player lobbies, diverse and fan favorite areas to land and explore for secrets and gear, fully customizable weapons and equipment, unlockable characters, and zombies throughout the map in special locations. Some areas were based off multiplayer maps from across every Treyarch COD title, alongside with a handful of interesting original areas. Zombies make an appearance with fan fare galore in throwback areas such as Asylum and Lighthouse and many more harder to find spots on the map. Zombies also drop Zombie-related gear such as the Raygun and monkey bombs. Prove your strong enough to withstand the hoard and enemy players and you’ll be rewarded with a spin of the mystery box. Can you Win Blackout?, drop in and goodluck.
Multiplayer makes a strong comeback in this years COD with “boots on the ground” combat and the specialist system as introduced in Black Ops 3. Every classic mode in every COD game released makes a return with a handful of new community and party games for more relaxed and new players. Sniping has never been this easy, so all you tryhard players who play against your friends in quick-scope lobbies will have more fun, especially with many different styles of maps to choose from to make the experience even more interesting and tense. I’ve experienced terrible spawning however so hopefully that gets patched in a future update, or hopefully by the time this article is released.
Last but certainly not least, the most anticipated mode for most returning players: Zombies. Not only has Treyarch delivered a whole new in-depth system for you to experiment and optify your experience, Zombies has never been this story driven, cryptic, and above everything else, fun. We’re met with a completely new cast of survivors who each have their own personalities and interesting contribution to their story, complete with fully voiced dialogue that’ll leave you laughing and entertained. We also see the return of the original crews and both versions of Dempsey, Richtofen, Nikolai, and Takeo. For those who understand what I mean, the original voice actors triumphantly voice the staples in the zombies franchise with playful callbacks to other maps and memories and with new funny quips for each other. Characters aside, let’s talk gameplay. There are so many interesting and player friendly changes to just about every aspect here. To perks, to customizing weapons like in BO3, to a whole new super weapon system, the game has been changed forever to put it bluntly and we’d be here forever if I were to explain every new feature.
There are so many things that I could say but I’ll leave you with a small summary.
Black Ops 4 isn’t quite enough to revive the franchise but it’s enough to keep it alive... for a little longer at least. In closing, I’d give the game a solid 6/10. It’s an above average game and one all modern FPS gamers need to get their hands on, but be aware, it can be mildly repetitive and its in favor of multiplayer exclusive content. If your not a fan of multiplayer games then this is an easy pass or wait for a price drop. I hope to see you on the battlefield.
